Colectomy

A colectomy is a surgical procedure in which all or part of the colon (large intestine) is removed. It is often performed to treat diseases or conditions affecting the colon such as colon cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, diverticulitis or bowel obstruction.

There are different types of colectomies based on the portion of the colon that is removed: Total Colectomy, Right or Left Hemicolectomy, Proctocolectomy.

The procedure can be performed in two ways:

  • Laparoscopic Colectomy: A minimally invasive technique using small incisions, a camera and special instruments. This approach leads to quicker recovery and less pain.
  • Open Colectomy: In this method, a larger incision is made in the abdomen to access and remove the affected part of the colon.

Benefits of Colectomy:

  • Tumor Removal: Colectomy is often the primary treatment for colorectal cancer, allowing for the removal of cancerous tumors and surrounding tissue, which can improve survival rates and reduce the risk of cancer recurrence.
  • Symptom Relief: For patients with severe Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, colectomy can relieve debilitating symptoms including pain, diarrhea and bleeding.
  • Preventing Complications: In cases of recurrent diverticulitis, removing the affected section of the colon can prevent complications such as abscesses, perforation and bowel obstruction.
  • Minimally Invasive Technique: Laparoscopic colectomy involves smaller incisions, which can result in less postoperative pain, shorter recovery times and reduced scarring compared to open colectomy.
  • Faster Recovery: Patients undergoing laparoscopic or minimally invasive colectomy often experience shorter hospital stays and quicker return to daily activities compared to traditional open surgery.
